THE 2025 ANNUAL REPORT
Each year we innovate, create, and play witness to amazing things happening at Opportunity Knocks. We do our best to rally our team to create a full account of those stories through the annual report so that all of the amazing people who support the mission know their impact.
Momentum Building
Hello, Friend of OK
Opportunity Knocks is in motion — advancing with purpose through a season of transformation, expansion, and targeted growth. As we continue realigning ourselves within the state’s system of providers, we are building stability within our leadership team, redeveloping space-sharing agreements, all while investing in the spaces, partnerships, and programs that we expect will sustain our mission for years to come.
This year, we have taken on new space and new responsibilities at the Community Center, we have reconfigured our enterprise operations to increase scale, and completed Phase I of the new Knockout Farm site development. At the same time, we are continuing to invest in a long-term grant strategy and making targeted investments in staffing and organizational capacity.
Warriors are moving too — learning, working, and thriving in vocational programs, wellness activities, and community-based initiatives. We are seeing new faces come to our program. We are working with families to overcome financial barriers so that there is no obstacle to access. We are also venturing out into the community in new and creative ways so that the mission stays connected to the places where Warriors live, work, and move.
We’ve put this report together to catch you up to speed and understand the impact of your support, as well as the importance of your continued connection. Please read on and enjoy the scroll.
Gratefully Yours, Mike and Phil Carmody, Opportunity Knocks
Late 2024 and early 2025 were ripe with transition opportunities. We brought a new Program Director up in the ranks to lead OK Programs. We found a promising new Development Director. We hired a new position in enterprise to help sales and marketing and we forged a bond with a grant writer. The former two were key transitions made opportune by departures. The latter two were key additions made opportune by organizational capacity priorities. All of those positions and the people filling them are embedded and truly installing their best energy into our growth. We are grateful for that energy.
It has been a long and winding road, but we are happy to report that we are now officially providing licensed programming of Community Day Services. The process has taken us nearly two years to complete. The journey has reached a point where the families that frequent our program can now begin to engage and lift a weight on the family finances. Not all Warriors have funding, but the ones who do can now use that benefit to enroll in the program.
OK does not own property. We believe this enables us to focus more directly on programming. This belief bears true when the partnerships are on a sturdy foundation. In the past 18 months, we lost our original farm site, found a new one, broke down the old farm and moved over to the new one. In a short season, we were able to establish a landscaped grow area that includes more than 40 raised beds that are accessible to ALL growers. We look forward to year two when we expect to finalize a long term lease agreement and begin the phase II installations.
We leaned hard into our efforts to gather state support in this phase of the mission. We sat with State Senate President Don Harmon in early 2025 and made an appeal for support of the farm site relocation, site development and investment in the vocational programming that is embedded on that site. We were elated to learn that we would be the recipient of a substantial grant from the Build Illinois Bond Fund. We have yet to see the dollars, but we expect it will be soon enough and go a long way to help grow this very special part of our mission.
The year of 2025 was full of projects in motion and coming to completion. We found a new farm site and began our mission migration to that site. We said goodbye to long-time leadership in our ranks and welcomed new rising stars into those vacant positions. We crossed important thresholds in our path to licensing our program and secured significant investments from the state coffers.
After 8 years at our original farm site in Maywood, the property was sold and the farm had to move. We began the year without a clear new site to relocate. We conclude the year with a fresh new partnership and a beautiful new home for the Knockout Farm. The year one installation is complete and includes the landscape and buildout of the Grow Area, as well as setup of the waterway and drip irrigation systems. The new farm site is in Forest Park, just north of The Altenheim in a natural expanse called The Grove.
We are proud to say that we are a licensed provider of community day services. We crossed the final threshold in the fall of 2025 and brought our first group of waiver-funded Warriors into the program. We are happy to implement this option so that programming can be more financially accessible for Warriors and families. We also believe that our model of programming can provide an example of ways the system can be improved.
The year of 2025 included transitions of two very important leadership roles. In the early months of the year, we were continuing the onboarding/orientation of our newly-promoted OK Programs Director. We also found our Development Director. We also hired a new Sales and Marketing Specialist for the enterprise team and forged a relationship with a grant writer. All major steps in our organizational growth and all have been strong leaders throughout a year of growth, opportunity, and accomplishment.
We were very excited to learn in February that we would be the recipient of a state grant via the Build Illinois Bond Fund. This fund is managed by the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. The funding will go to support our farm relocation, site development and growth investments in our enterprise and vocational training programs and initiatives. Big thanks to Senator Don Harmon and his team for recognizing our mission and investing in OK.
The people that attend our programs are the centerpiece of the mission. The people that volunteer and share their special gifts with our program make the mission all the more amazing. Read on and find a few warrior and program activity features.
She has stepped into new programs with an open heart, including joining the school visit group at Roosevelt School. Grace greets every student, teacher, and aide with genuine warmth, making each person feel seen. Her smile is one of the first things people notice, and her kindness radiates throughout the day! Grace brings joy, connection, and comfort wherever she goes, and we’re so grateful to have her as part of our Warrior family.
Over time, he’s stepped more confidently into programs, moving from quietly coloring to actively engaging with Warriors and staff throughout the day. His talents shine in so many ways: his incredible handwriting, expressive artwork, and uncanny ability to memorize film lines. Jack’s humor, creativity, and one-of-a-kind personality make him an unforgettable part of our OK community.
Brilliant and deeply kind, Senai connects with people in such a genuine way. She eagerly steps into new experiences and uses her voice with strength and pride. Her growth is especially clear during school visits: once nervous, she now builds meaningful connections with students at Brooks and Julian. Senai’s leadership, openness, and heart brighten every space she walks into.
Chris has shown incredible independence as he learns to propagate plants, care for them in water, and take pride in the process. He’s also one of our most dependable helpers, always up and moving, leading tasks like shredding, cleaning, and keeping our space running smoothly. Chris’s growth, determination, and one-of-a-kind personality make him a standout in our community.
such as stocking the Forest Park community fridge or volunteering at Feed My Starving Children, or picking up litter around the riverforest trailside. These experiences allow warriors to see how even small actions can create real change.
What truly sets this program apart is the way it builds confidence, leadership, and connection. Warriors learn that their actions matter, their kindness carries weight, and their presence strengthens our community. Volunteering gives them space to take initiative, collaborate with peers, and feel proud of the impact they make.
The program also helps shift how the broader community views people with disabilities not as bystanders, but as capable, visible, and valued contributors who make our community more inclusive.
OK staff use creative strategies and adaptive tools so each warrior can take part in activities in meaningful ways! The 1:1 model strengthens safety, inclusion, and community by ensuring every voice is heard, even when nonverbal. Above all, a 1:1 simply provides the individualized support that allows every warrior to participate and experience success.

This year’s Annual Giving Fund theme celebrates the momentum carrying Opportunity Knocks into a crucial new chapter. We are tuning our systems, upgrading our engines, and charting new routes that will drive long-term strength and stability.
Across the organization, key projects are moving from planning to acceleration: reimagining and expanding our space under a new lease at the community center; relocating and developing the Knockout Farm’s next home base; strengthening supports for Warriors and families; and investing in specialized roles that will fuel long-term growth in grants and enterprise success.
As we shift to licensed provider-ship and expand program offerings, our longtime home at the River Forest Community Center must evolve. We’re negotiating a renewed lease that supports increased enrollment, enhanced safety standards, and more accessible, purpose-built program spaces. This investment will create a stronger, more functional base where Warriors can learn, work, grow, and stay in motion every day.
Our service must transcend hardship. Overcoming adversity is a cornerstone of the Warrior and Warrior Family and Opportunity Knocks mission. We do not allow support-needs to prevent Warriors from enrollment. This includes staffing-needs, as well as financial hardship agreements. In 2025, we developed 10 hardship agreements and absorbed a significant amount of program fees to keep our doors open to the Warriors in these families.
With the new site secured and a very busy Year 1 buildout behind us, Year 2 at the Knockout Farm focuses on enhancing surface accessibility between garden beds, expanding grow areas, and planting perennial pollinators. Investments include a classroom pavilion, updated planting and harvest plans, and community-connected markets. These improvements strengthen vocational skill development, hands-on learning, and Warrior engagement—keeping the farm productive, accessible, and fully in motion.
To sustain growth and support families, we’re investing in the roles and systems that fuel long-term success. A grants lead will secure multi-year funding, expand partnerships, and strengthen assistance for participants. Enterprise investments will advance sales, marketing, and production capacity, creating more paid vocational opportunities for Warriors. These improvements help Opportunity Knocks operate smarter, grow stronger, and stay in motion.
We believe deeply in the importance of developing and nurturing community partnerships that facilitate collaborative programming and shared spaces, enhancing the integration and interaction between Warriors and the broader community, thereby demonstrating the mutual benefits and essential interdependence of these relationships. Here are a few features of how and with whom we are living those beliefs.
way of sponsorship of our events. We’ve known the Planeks since we laid down our early roots. Always a great partnership, but this year raised up to the next level.
“Being able to partner with Opportunity Knocks in helping to provide the safe, nurturing, and welcoming environment that it extends to its Warriors is part of our belief in building a stronger, more inclusive community. We try to extend similar comforts to our tenants in making our community a more valuable place to live.
Witnessing first-hand the involvement and participation of the O.K. Warriors is both remarkable and truly rewarding. Seeing them work, participate, and thrive under their guidance and leadership provides us with the motivation to support such an impactful organization that’s making such a difference in the Warriors’ lives, and the lives of those around us.” – Terry Fahey, Oak Park Apartments
The Giving Tuesday love was followed up by them backing the costs – labor and materials – that were needed to establish the waterway access on the new farm site. The OP Apts crew sponsored the whole job, dispatched their crews to do the work and did a perfect job. They did it all with a smile and let us know it was a privilege. We couldn’t be more grateful for the love.
He spent many days with our team and countless hours with his own to produce a powerful visual representation of our mission. We are using the calendar as an appreciation piece for our community of supporters. Each month highlights a distinct group of Warriors, key events, and important mission moments. We are deeply grateful for Jeff’s generosity and talent.
remarkable location less than a quarter mile from our program headquarters. We engaged our longstanding partners at Forest Park Village Hall, and their support enabled us to pursue a shared vision for relocating the farm to The Grove—a 2.5-acre site just north of the historic Altenheim, featuring structures suitable for restoration and community use.
Our first year at The Grove operated under a Use of the Public Way agreement while we began work toward a long-term lease. We completed significant groundwork, including the grow area buildout, bed construction, water access improvements, and accessible pathways. Year two promises even greater progress. We are grateful for the Village’s partnership and the strong foundation it has created for the farm’s future.
to their hearts, valuable to the community, and fun for everyone.
In 2023 NYFF & OK forged a bond and began a journey of partnership. Along the way of this 3-year journey, this group of good-hearted humans has hosted events in benefit of Opportunity Knocks, raising friends and funds for OK.
It is hard to express the impression this partnership has had on OK. They’ve been all-in on supporting everything we do. Whether putting on their cleats and coming out to play in the OK Classic or getting all dapped up for the gala, the NYFF crew has shown out for Opportunity Knocks at every turn. They’ve sent groups out to the farm to help, groups into OK Programs to volunteer. It really feels like they are embedded. A tangible part of us. – Phil Carmody, President
They have raised more than $125,000 in support of the Warrior Mission. They have volunteered as individuals and as a group in the programs, on the farm and at events. They have also helped us find new staff to join our team, develop creative marketing projects and plug in at every level of the organization! We are so grateful for this incredible partnership and all of the depth of the relationships that have developed over the years. Please join us in appreciating them.
Opportunity Knocks was proud to be one of the first organizations to test this innovative program, and the experience exceeded all expectations. The students were engaged, thoughtful, and deeply supportive of our participants and staff. We are thrilled to continue this partnership as the Capstone program expands to include the entire senior class this year.
We have had the opportunity to speak directly with Fenwick students about our mission and volunteer opportunities, which has led to a steady stream of passionate and dedicated volunteers. Fenwick students consistently arrive eager to help, quick to connect with participants, and genuinely excited to support the Opportunity Knocks mission. Their kindness, enthusiasm, and commitment make them a valued part of our community.

This mission is powered by the funds that support it. We take the highest level of fiduciary responsibility in oversight and management of our finances and ensuring our operations are honest and efficient. Our organization and activity require a diverse array of financial support and investment. We are committed to cultivating, managing and sustaining a well-balanced array of support and showing the highest level of care and gratitude in managing those investments.
Despite finishing FY25 below budget, Opportunity Knocks has made significant strides in stabilizing and diversifying revenue. Strong campaign-based giving, growth in township and high-confidence grants, and positive momentum in Enterprise initiatives provide a solid foundation. Those developments align with an event fundraising strategy and steady program enrollment to contribute to a budget strategy that is more reliable and conservative from a risk standpoint. Operational adjustments in Programs and Enterprise, along with strategic staffing refinements and a conservative, data-informed budget, reduce risk and improve sustainability. Based on these measures, OK has charted a more clearly defined path toward financial stability and growth with FY26 projections grounded in realistic, well-informed expectations.

As an organization that relies on event fundraising for nearly 30% of the overall operating budget, we continue to see great outcomes from these efforts. The events produce critical funds for the mission AND create critical connections between our community and the mission.
None of this would have been possible without the amazing volunteers from local clubs and organizations such as OPRF Husky Helpers, OPRF Tau Gamma, and Fenwick and OPRF Best Buddies. A big shoutout to our Warriors, Players, OK Staff, donors, and spectators who made the day a memorable one.
The day featured co-ed, 14-inch softball games, fostering inclusivity and connection while reflecting OK’s mission of creating accessible and supportive opportunities.
The event saw 15 teams, 218 players, over 550 donors, and countless volunteers and spectators. Softball provides an opportunity for the Warriors to play alongside their peers in a fully inclusive environment. Since its 2007 inception, the Classic has grown significantly, continuing to exemplify the organization’s commitment to community and the Warrior Mission.
Our top fundraising teams for two years running are the Soft Serves and Unbreakable Fitness. Between the two teams, they raised more than $19,000! In the individual race, Molly Mullins went for a three-peat and is once again the top fundraiser! A big thank you as well to runners up Melvin Barnes and Mike McGarry. Last, but not least, congratulations to the tournament winners of the 18th Annual OK Classic, the Strikes!
We ate, we drank, we danced, we raised some dollars, we told some stories about the mission, and we featured some special guests. We recognized this year’s Warrior of the Year, Johno Carmody. We also shined a spotlight on our Community Partner of the Year, Not Your Father’s Foundation. We also honored the Board Director of the Year, Greg Ignoffo, the Auxiliary Board Member of the Year, Tiffany Fustar, and the Volunteer of the Year, Nicholas Palermo. It was a privilege to be able to celebrate our partners and the Warrior mission together.
With a record high attendance of 525 guests and 30 very generous sponsors, we were able to rally substantial support to help us hit all of our fundraising goals! It was our best fund-a-need appeal yet, as we adapted to uncertain economic conditions and still prevailed to meet the moment. Thank you to the amazing planning committee, event volunteers, sponsors, auction donors, and of course the event attendees who showed up and showed out for the Warriors.
