2024 ANNUAL REPORT

GROWTH ROOTED IN COMMUNITY

A YEAR IN REVIEW

Each year we innovate, create and play witness to amazing things happening at Opportunity Knocks. We do our best to rally our team to create a full account of those stories through the annual report so that all of the amazing people who support the mission know their impact.

The Leadership Letter

A Reflection & Inventory by Mike & Phil Carmody

Friends of the Mission,

The theme we’ve been playing with through this year’s Annual Giving Fund is cheeky and fun, but also full of many very stark metaphors that describe our experience in the past year. We’ve pulled up as many roots in 2024, as we have planted new seeds. Projects abound and opportunities to exercise our resilience were bountiful.

We battled through one of our toughest budget performances in the history of the organization. We transitioned major leadership positions, built new land and lease agreements and finally completed the revision of our strategic plan.

While we’ve managed through many endeavors, we’ve continued to deliver on our core objective to offer engaging, high-quality programs, enterprise and partnerships. We invite you to walk through the year in review with us by reading down the page to see highlights of what’s happened, takeaways from our best lessons learned and preview of the projects that continue and begin in 2025.

We are thankful for your continued support and commitment and wishing you all the best in the new year ahead.

Thankfully,

Mike & Phil Carmody

STATE LICENSE STRATEGY & PROGRESS

Late in 2023, we decided to pursue a state license as a community day services (CDS) provider and partner with our friends at L’Arche to co-create independent living supports under their CILA license. We’ve obtained a provisional CDS license and anticipate full licensure in 2025, improving accessibility for families and Warriors using waiver-funded support. This has been an immense undertaking for our team and we are looking forward to completing the process and enhancing the sustainability of our program and organization. The remaining transition will continue to challenge us. The opportunity now is to appreciate the progress.

LAND & LEASE OPPORTUNITIES

OK does not own property. We believe this enables us to focus more directly on programming. In 2024, all of our lease and space-sharing arrangements faced pivotal changes. Our lease at the RFCC is actively being renegotiated. We are happy to share that we’ll be bringing a tentative agreement to our boards in January. With a renewed focus on a sales strategy for Knockout Pickles’ and a targeted relaunch of catering we are expanding our presence at Events by Cibula where we do all of our commercial kitchen production. We’ll be bringing enterprise work and more programming to that space in 2025! Finally, the property where the Knockout Farm is located was sold, though we completed the 2024 growing season. Plans are underway to find a larger, permanent space in 2025.

STAFF LEADERSHIP TRANSITIONS

This summer, we bid farewell to Kim Meares, a cherished leader since 2010 and Day Program Director since 2013, as she moved to Connecticut. Her departure opened opportunities for leadership development. Anna Kellar was promoted to Program Director, with Grace Sexton advancing from Program Leader to Program Coordinator. Simultaneously, Edie Anderson stepped into a full-time leadership role, guiding programs and coordinating volunteer initiatives. These transitions reflect our commitment to cultivating talent and ensuring strong leadership. While we miss Kim, we are excited about the energy and vision Anna, Grace, and Edie bring to their new roles as we look ahead.

BOARD LEADERSHIP TRANSITIONS

In governance and support, we benefited greatly from the Nominating & Governance Committee, led by Karen Hunter, Terry Brown, and Greg Ignoffo. They revamped our board recruitment and orientation process, resulting in clear new policies and four dynamic new board members welcomed in September. Meanwhile, the Auxiliary Board also grew, adding three new members, including Warriors Jarvis Hart and Georgia Hunter, who embody our commitment to inclusion. These additions mark a significant step forward for both boards. We look forward to their contributions and are excited about the big things ahead for 2025!

A YEAR OF WORK

2024 HIGHLIGHTS

While the year was full of transitions, 2024 was also full of projects in motion and coming to completion. We developed a bright new space for our team and our programming, we finally completed the work on our organizational plan, we expanded our program to its fullest schedule and we relaunched a key enterprise initiative.

RELOCATING & REMODELING

After spending nearly 10 years on the 1st floor in our original program space, we secured an opportunity to relocate and remodel into a sunnier, more connected space on the 2nd floor of the community center. We remodeled two rooms, added 9 workstations and 550 square feet of space for programming. The movement also re-created a space-sharing agreement with our original neighbors at the RFCC, the OPRFHS CITE program.

A COMPLETE STRATEGIC PLAN

The Project Team led us on a nearly 18-month process to complete an overhaul and update to our organization’s strategic plan. With consultation by Susan Parks and holistic contributions from the Warriors, families, staff, boards and other stakeholders that comprise our organization, we completed this plan and mapped our road ahead for the next 5-10 years. It’s a beautiful thing and we’ve been excited to get right to it.

PROGRAM EXPANSION

The plan for 2024 included a staggered expansion of OK Programs. We finished the march early in the year and completed our plan to add full-day and PM Program blocks on every day of our program week. Upon completion, we offer 8.5 hours of programming per day, total of 34 hours of available programming each week, averaging nearly 20 Warriors at all times.

KNOCKOUT CATERING RELAUNCH

Catering made a valiant effort to persevere through and out the other side of COVID, but we had some staffing and strategic opportunities that shut us down for a period of time. After a long recalibration and steady ramp-up, in September of 2024, we were proud to make it back to a point of relaunch and with a renewed focus targeted at corporate partners. This focus intends to keep our team working during daytime hours.

JOHNO

A WARRIOR STORY

AN O.G. WARRIOR ON THE MOVE
John Carmody is the embodiment of the "original OG," a true cornerstone of the OK community. John, or Johno, as he is affectionately known, is an invaluable member of the team. He and his friend group were the catalyst for the launch of Opportunity Knocks and they have been here since day 1...

This winter, Johno is gearing up for a very exciting new chapter: moving out of the family home and into a CILA that is operated by L’Arche, a long-time partner of OK. This is a monumental step, one that marks incredible growth and independence for Johno and his family.

Johno’s move also highlights an important story in the mission at OK. Currently, individuals living in a CILA are not able to access our programming with their funding, due to the fact that we are an unlicensed provider. After nearly 18 months in the application process, OK is moving to the final stages of becoming a licensed provider. This transition will be a test for OK, as we install the technology and team that license compliance requires. We expect to be licensed and accessible in this new way in early 2025.

“This moment in Johno’s life is significant beyond words,” according to John’s brother Phil Carmody. It’s awesome to see him step out and exercise his independence. As a family, we are truly a mixed bag of emotions. Joy and excitement are present alongside fear and anxiety. As it does, Johno’s steady calm and confidence set us at ease. I can hear him in my head saying, ‘I’ve got this, Brother.’ And it’s all good. Here we go.”

John’s journey is a testament to his determination and spirit. In OK Programs, he’s the first to step up and lend a helping hand. Whether it’s assisting with clean-up after lunch or offering encouragement to his friends, John always goes above and beyond. Each day starts with his cheerful rounds of “good mornings,” brightening the atmosphere and bringing smiles to everyone he meets.

“I love seeing my friends.” John replied when asked what he loves about Opportunity Knocks. “Also cooking, farming, the car wash, and the softball tournament. “ John also commented on what he is looking forward to in his new living situation. “I’m excited to live with my roommates!”

As many in the OK community know, John is at the center of the Opportunity Knocks origin story. John’s brothers Mike and Phil Carmody saw the lack of opportunities available to John following his 22nd birthday, when he aged out of the programs provided by the state. The rest is history – 15 years later, Opportunity Knocks continues to work with Warriors like John to ensure that every member of the community is able to live, work, learn, grow and pursue a life of their design.

DESTINY

A WARRIOR STORY

A NEW WARRIOR WITH A BIG HEART
Destiny, a newer Warriors at Opportunity Knocks, exemplifies the spirit of our mission. From the moment she stepped into our programs, she has brought a vibrant energy and joy that enriches every space she enters. Her positive attitude and infectious smile create a welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone around her, making it clear that it truly is the Warriors who make Opportunity Knocks the showing how much Warriors like her contribute to making Opportunity Knocks the supportive and uplifting community it is meant to be...

Despite her full schedule—balancing work at Dominican University, being enrolled in the Oak Park River Forest High School CITE Program, and actively participating in Opportunity Knocks—Destiny never falters in her enthusiasm or commitment. She juggles her many responsibilities with a smile on her face, and her contributions to the community have not gone unnoticed

“It has been a joy to watch Destiny come into programs. She brings so much energy and joy to the room.” Says Mike Carmody. “I have and continue to watch her confidence grow and her growth as a human.”

Destiny explained what she loves about Opportunity Knocks.

“I love helping other people and making new friends.” Destiny says. “I like playing games and listening to music!”

Destiny’s journey with Opportunity Knocks is just beginning, and we are excited to see how her confidence, leadership, and passion continue to inspire those around her. Her presence in the program reminds us all of the power of positivity, resilience, and the strength of community.

Dynamic Lynks

A Community in Harmony

Jamming out at OK
At Opportunity Knocks, we are growing a community where individuals of all abilities are celebrated, supported, and encouraged to live a life they design for themselves. Programs are a vital part of our mission, and through activities like music therapy, Warriors are building bonds and exploring one of life’s great joys—creativity. Shelby, a music therapist from our partner Dynamic Lynks, plays a pivotal role. Each Tuesday, she works with the Warriors, helping them develop new skills and express themselves creatively through music and movement. While some Warriors were initially hesitant, Shelby’s inclusive approach quickly won them over. Now, they eagerly anticipate her arrival to create songs, play instruments, sing, dance, and even write collaborative stories...

Ryan Gravely shares, “I like it and I like the songs. I learn about how I feel.” Max Wright adds, “It helps me relax and I get to share some of the songs I like.” Anna Kellar notes, “Shelby is absolutely AMAZING with the Warriors! She finds fun and new ways to get everyone involved.”

Shelby highlights how music fosters inclusivity: “Music and playing instruments can be used and adapted in so many ways to accommodate each person’s sensory needs, communication form, and motor and cognitive abilities. Whether we are all grabbing an instrument and jamming together or writing our own song, each group member is given the opportunity to choose how they would like to contribute to the music making and often offer each other support while we can have fun jamming together!”
Through music, we are building a stronger, more harmonious community.

 DESTA’S BOOK CLUB

 Reading Together, Growing Together

PAGES THAT BIND US
The Warriors at Opportunity Knocks take part in a wide range of activities during programming, from fitness and cooking to workforce development—and now, a book club. Desta is not only the mother of a Warrior, Allison, but she has also dedicated time to volunteering weekly and hosting a Warrior Book Club. Desta brings a calming energy and encouraging spirit which allows Warriors to enjoy reading, grow as individuals, and take some time to relax and reflect. Desta's commitment to the Warriors as a whole shows an incredible dedication to building up the community...

Desta and the Warriors have transformed afternoons into moments of magic through the Warrior Book Club. Her presence fosters an atmosphere where Warriors feel heard, inspired, and excited to engage with new tales.

“Book club keeps the Warriors engaged in group thought and gets them to do critical thinking. It gets people excited for the afternoon!” says Sophie E., a staff member who has witnessed the club’s impact firsthand. Edie A., another staff member, adds, “We’ve been so lucky to have Desta come in and share with us her love of reading!”

Desta looks forward to her afternoons at OK, as well. “Opportunity Knocks is a fantastic program, and I am excited to be able to help out in any way. I have a ton of fun prepping for my weekly visit. The young adults in the group are always welcoming and seem to enjoy participating. I also appreciate their willingness to roll with just about any story or story related activity we try.”

The warriors echo this enthusiasm. “I like it because it’s fun and it teaches me about books. I like books,” shares Ryan Gravely. Meanwhile, John Carmody notes, “I like her stories. She teaches me about new books!” Whether it’s Sonya Taylor expressing how the club makes her happy or Tony Cetin stating, “I like the story!” The love for reading is palpable.

ROOM TO GROW

2025 Projects & INvestments

This year’s Annual Giving Fund theme is well-suited to summarize active and ongoing endeavors in many areas of the organization. It’s all about roots and growth. We are revisiting well-established partnerships to develop new space-sharing agreements, we are developing new partnerships to relocate spaces where we have been operating. We are also planting new seeds by investing resources in initiatives. Scroll around below to learn more about work done and work in progress.

RELOCATING THE FARM

After 8 years at our current site in Maywood, the property has sold and the farm must move. Conversations are underway to secure a new site that is nearby and offering all that the first farm lacked. This will be a HUGE project for OK, requiring funds, friends and heavy lifting. We expect to be farming new land in the Sprint of 2025.

LICENSE TO PROGRAM

We are proud to say that we have been granted a provisional license as a provider of community day services. We still have some steps to take before we can accept state funding for service, but we’re getting close and excited to implement this option so that programming can be more financially accessible for Warriors and families.

INVESTMENT IN GROWTH

We have recognized that our development team needs some professional grade support in a very specific area of growth. We believe that grants and grant writing are the packet of seeds that will help us plant the next field at Opportunity Knocks. We’ve contracted with a pro for the duration of this fiscal year and we’re working hard to bring new connections and support to the mission so that we can yield a strong harvest.

PRODUCT TO MARKET

The Knockout Pickle product line is well-established and ready to take to market. In October of 2024, we re-launched a new and improved catering menu. We’ve recognized the importance of a human resource to help drive our sales and marketing efforts so that we can keep Warriors at Work in the enterprise. This year we are looking to add personnel to account for this sales and marketing energy.

2024 ANNUAL REPORT

PARTNERSHIPS

We believe deeply in the importance of developing and nurturing community partnerships that facilitate collaborative programming and shared spaces, enhancing the integration and interaction between Warriors and the broader community, thereby demonstrating the mutual benefits and essential interdependence of these relationships. Here are a few features of how and with whom we are living those beliefs.

FRIENDS ON MADISON ST.

THE STREET OF DREAMS

In 2024, Knockout Kitchen mapped an exciting collaboration with Robert’s Westside, consolidating operations while exploring a restaurant venture. Meanwhile, our partnership with Events by Cibula thrives, supporting pickle production, catering, and new culinary programming in 2025. These collaborations are vital to Knockout Enterprise’s growth—please support these valued local businesses!

______________________

We explored a unique opportunity to realize the full vision for the Knockout Kitchen by mapping a potential partnership at Robert’s Westside on Madison St. in Forest Park. Donnie Biggins, the owner and operator of Robert’s is a long-time friend of OK. This venture offered OK a chance to consolidate our production and catering under one roof while also running the restaurant. We fully evaluated the feasibility, including budgeting, advisory consultations, and agreement negotiations. Though we’ve always seen a restaurant as a key part of Knockout, this was our first opportunity to project a real plan and explore its potential as a major step forward.

As much as we fell in love with the opportunity, we realized that we were not ready for this level of commitment and responsibility. With those acknowledgements in mind, we thanked Donnie for the opportunity, reset and refocused our energy on driving the success of the current and emerging Knockout initiatives. We also have kept our pop up series in rotation at Robert’s Westside, allowing us to gather and trial a variety of menus in a unique space.

The Knockout product line and catering offerings continue to be produced at our current kitchen space, Events by Cibula, which is owned and operated by our friend Linda Cibula. Early in 2025, we’ll be adding more programming and enterprise shifts on the calendar at EBC. We will be hosting culinary programming, ramping up our pickle production and looking to sustain the success of our catering initiatives.

Both of these partnerships have been critical to the development of Knockout Enterprise. We are grateful for the camaraderie and co-mingled operations with these unique local businesses. Please consider supporting them as patron in the community.

WINTRUST OAK PARK BANK

BANKING & BACKING OK

The story of our partnership with Wintrust Bank began back in 2020. When the pandemic set in and shut down our events and programming with an unforeseeable end, we were in line with every other business, organization and agency in effort to apply and receive PPP funds.

Our first application with our previous bank was unsuccessful, creating a high level of anxiety and uncertainty. Thankfully, we had a new board member, Greg Ignoffo. Greg had a guy. He facilitated a connection to the Wintrust Team and suggested we send our follow up application thru them. We did just that and secured absolutely critical PPP funds that helped us survive the pandemic.

Shortly after that, we moved our banking to Wintrust. This was just as the Oak Park Bank branch was opening. We’ve enjoyed the partnership, working with Chris Griffith and his team to streamline our banking operations, converge our payment gateways and install a new spending system. We’ve appreciated the reachability of the OPB Staff, as much as we have enjoyed their efficient banking platform. Wintrust has also become one of OK’s biggest sponsors, supporting each of our marquee fundraisers and always establishing a presence in the community of those events.

Development & Finance

The 2024 budget performance was full of opportunities and lessons to learn. We fell short in a number of projections. While we did, we recognized where we need to place and replace personnel and systems to help us first calibrate more reasonable budget objectives and second reach those objectives. To the right, you’ll see a summary of our 2024 efforts in several key categories.

  • Enterprise – 12%
  • Grants – 68%
  • OK Programs – 90%

EVENTS

As an organization that relies on event fundraising for nearly 30% of the overall operating budget, we continue to see great outcomes from these efforts. The events produce critical funds for the mission AND create critical connections between our community and the mission.

THE OK CLASSIC

A NEW YEAR AT THE OKC

The 17th Annual OK Classic was a home-run! We held this year’s event at Veterans Park in North Riverside. Despite a venue change due to construction, the community's engagement led to record-breaking fundraising efforts, with over $125,000 raised.

The day featured co-ed, 14-inch softball games, fostering inclusivity and connection while reflecting OK’s mission of creating accessible and supportive opportunities.

The event saw 16 teams, 258 players, over 625 donors, and countless volunteers and spectators. Since its 2007 inception, the Classic has grown significantly, continuing to exemplify the organization’s commitment to community and the Warrior Mission.

A big shout out to our top fundraising teams, the Soft Serves and Unbreakable Fitness. Between the two teams, they raised more than $22,000 or 30% of the entire fundraising campaign. In the individual race, we tip our cap to two-time top fundraiser Molly Mullins and runners up, Tiffany Fustar and Mike McGarry. Last, but not least, the first-time tournament winners of the 17th Annual OK Classic, Nothing But Sauce!

THE OK GALA

A NIGHT FOR OPPORTUNITIES

This year’s OK Gala hosted another beautiful crowd at the Bridgeport Arts Center. We took some time in the program to honor partnership and Warrior excellence when we recognized our Community Partner of the Year, John Hayley’s Unbreakable Fitness and the Warrior of the Year, Nick Gomez.

We also hosted a very successful fund-a-need appeal that was prefaced by this special video that tells the story of one Warrior and her journey in the OK Mission.

With a record 474 attendees and support from 30 generous sponsors, the gala underscored the strength of the OK community and its commitment to fostering partnerships and creating interdependent and inclusive connections.
